The other day I read Priscilla Shirer’s ticketed Passenger’story on her book, Awaken and it reminded me of an incident that happened n on one of my trips to Johannesburg a few months back.
I walked through the passages of the plane when most had been seated already and there he was, one of the most loved television presenters sitting on the window seat. I looked at him and I checked my ticket and carried on towards him. He did not recognize me, but I remembered him. He had interviewed me for a segment on his show just a few weeks before. I suppose that’s normal, I also don’t remember everyone I meet through work. My colleague walking with me soon realizes what’s about to happen but reckons I won’t dare ask him to move. I politely hovered over and asked if I could… (have the seat of course). Surprised he looked at his ticket to double checked his seat, slightly embarrassed he responded “I am so sorry, I think I am on the one before this one. ” I smiled politely and waited for him as he gathered his belongings to move to his rightful seat while I took mine. As Priscilla points out; no matter who we are, what we have accomplished or how much fame we have accrued we cannot take a seat we do not have a ticket for on the plane.
This truth is the same for our heavenly seats, it is not our earthly accomplishments, positions of influence and possessions that earn us our eternal seats. Looking at this analogy I realized how things are different in space, there are rules we have to abide by that are different to our norms. Our earthly status seizes to be of value. We are governed by new rules, a different type of status. Walking into an aeroplane is like a rehearsal of what will happen on that very day unknown to us. We will rise at the sound of a trumpet and we will assume what we have always assumed, but on this day there will be different rules, our seat tickets will not be based on what we are known for. Like on an aeroplane, our social standing will mean very little in reference to our seats. Our standing with Christ will determine what seats we occupy…
For Jesus said to him “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the father but through Me.”
Have you claimed your ticket? I ask myself this.
